Ryou
no subject
[He's a teenager, so in the end, what he really got out of it was the selfish, personal stuff. Nothing quite like your own inner thoughts physically punching you in the face and telling you you're lonely. Or that making a big stupid show out of yourself doesn't help. Or that drinking stolen alcohol and making out with strangers doesn't make you feel anything.]
[It's weird, how brave he feels after having all of that thrown in his face. He's been making himself miserable, he hasn't been honest at all, and-- and, well, he's only got one real friend to his name, he's been in love with him for ages, and he's suddenly ready to put faith in the fact that things will be okay if he tells him that.]
[He texted Ryou last night that he'd be coming back to school today, and asked him if he'd down to meet 20 minutes early to talk before class. They're meeting behind the school, where they're less likely to run into the other kids who like to hang out on the roof or by the shoe lockers.]
[He's as ready as he'll ever be, waiting outside and kicking at the dewy grass.]
no subject
[He's come to have one exception, though, a friend he made before he became fully jaded to the idea of forming bonds with others. He shook off everyone else, but Eddie was impossible. Something about him was just...magnetizing. He couldn't pull away from him, even when he tried. He thought, then, that Eddie was special, that he was the one to break his curse.]
[Then Eddie was gone for three weeks. It happened again.]
[The first week he was literally sick with worry. The second he started to accept that he was just...gone, like everyone else. And by the third he settled back into being fine with being alone, that this was just how it was meant to be. Solitude was the only state of being he was allowed. Some tried to offer condolences but he brushed them off; it was better no one got close to him. They'd get tired of him or keep dying. He was a plague.]
[He gets a text from a ghost on a school night and he rereads it ten times before he responds to what he considers might be a sick joke. Sure. He'll meet him. If this is a prank then he'll get what his bleeding heart deserves and if it's real, then...he doesn't know what he'll do. This isn't the first time he's wished someone back to life, it would just be the first time it came true.]
[Ryou's heart is pounding as he makes his way to the back of the school. What will he find? A dead man or a cruel person? Both might rip him to shreds. He rounds the corner and...and he stops short.]
[He thought maybe he'd go running to Eddie if it was him in the flesh, crying out to him, dropping his bag along the way. But instead he stands there, jaw slack. He feels...cold. How on earth is 20 minutes enough for them to talk about three weeks of what the hell happened? Is Eddie even going to tell him?]
[He pushes his lips together for a moment. Eddie would never hurt him on purpose, he can at least be sure of that. Something must have happened to him. He just can't get out of his own head about it.]
...You're back.

[Stupid. God, he's so stupid. That stunned, closed off expression-- what must he think, when Eddie just dropped off the face of the earth without so much as a text message? Haruhi said nobody reported him missing.]
[Ryou might have frozen, but Eddie can't stand the distance. He closes it, hands hovering awkwardly like he'd like to touch his friend's shoulders but isn't sure if he's allowed.]
Fuck, they-- dad really didn't report me missing, did he?
[He knows the standard excuse the team's been using to cover their disappearances. Hell, he'd known it before they told him, because his best friend is into the occult and rumors about kids from other schools vanishing and being found on the riverbed with strange bruises and no memories of where they'd been is the sort of thing Ryou pays attention to. The fact that the prior missing kids seem to be finding the later ones is something the police have kept closer to the chest, though.]
[He takes a deep breath. He came here to be brave. He can talk about the stupid situation without immediately breaking down.]
Are you--
[Never mind, not brave enough.]
Please don't be pissed at me, I swear I would have texted you if I could have, I don't-- I don't remember most of it, but I didn't have my phone and...
[He looks like he's about to cry.]
no subject
No one...took me seriously. I tried to get someone to look for you, but they...
[He had to be alone.]
[No--this isn't about him. It's about Eddie. Eddie's back, he's actually alive. Maybe Ryou isn't as cursed as he thought. He watches Eddie's face, takes in his expression, lets it hurt his heart just a little longer.]
I can't be...
[Ryou drops his bag and falls forward into Eddie. He wraps his arms around him and shoves his face into his neck. This is too much too soon. Why is he doing this? Who cares--he's so relieved, why should he care about why he does anything right now. Just because he's learned that no matter how much you tell others you love them they'll go away doesn't mean you have to stop.]
[He squeezes Eddie.]
You don't have to tell me anything. Just...promise not to go again.
[He's sick of loss.]

Ryou...
[Before he can get the guts to actually go through with it and put his hands on Ryou's arms, he's suddenly got an armful of distraught friend. He makes a sound that's suspiciously close to a sob and pulls him in tight, too desperate for the contact to be mindful of the fact that he's probably squishing Ryou's ribs.]
Never, never, god, never again, I didn't want to go the first time, I'm so sorry, I missed you.
[He presses his face into Ryou's hair, the familiar smell making something frantic and miserable in his chest go quiet. He exhales shakily.]
I, um. I have something I need to tell you, though. It's-- It's nothing bad, I just-- I should have told you a long time ago, and there was a bit there where I thought I'd never get to, and... I'm tired of being scared to say it.
