[You know what sucks? It sucks when the bar you usually operate out of shuts down because some asshole broke a wall. Eddie can't pick up clients or sell weed without knowing the place he's doing it isn't going to report him, and that cuts down on his access to blood and money to buy blood. He needs cash.]

[So, where has he ended up? This shitty all-night diner that doesn't give a shit if he's a vampire as long as he doesn't shoot up in the bathroom like the last guy. They have him wearing one of those half-uniforms with the apron. It's ridiculous.]

[There are currently 3 more hours on his shift and he's staring into the middle distance, wondering if anyone would notice if he made himself some hash browns.]

[It's late and Egg has worked up quite an appetite. Gig work is nice because it gives her full choice of her own hours but, because it pays like shit, she usually works really long hours. Today is no different. Delivering food is absolutely her preferred gig work but she's always really hungry by the end of the night. Her last stop is at an apartment down the street from one of her favorite diners so, she figures, why not stop by for some late night breakfast?

She locks her beat up vespa up outside of the diner, folding her official uber hub bag up and shoving it into the seat with her helmet, and walks in the door. Egg makes her way up to the counter and seats herself with a menu and notices Eddie staring into space looking like he'd rather be anywhere else. She smiles, she knows that look.]

Hey, you're new.

[Eddie, who was about 60% of the way into another plane of reality comprised only of greasy diner food, starts a little when Egg starts talking to him. You'd think the bell would have tipped him off, but nope, he's too far into the hash brown dimension.]

Oh, uh, hey, welcome?

[That definitely shouldn't be a question. Eddie isn't exactly made for customer service. He gets a smile on his face before he keeps going, at least. Points for trying.]

Yeah, I'm new. Take it you're a regular?

[Egg laughs at his confused welcome. He must be really new or his manager just doesn't give a shit. ]

Yeah, one of my regulars lives around here. I'm Ellana, I do food delivery for Uber Hub.

[She shrugs off her jacket, denim with patches including a bi pride flag on the shoulder, and looks at the menu.]

If I'm bugging you feel free to ignore me and keep staring at the wall.

4 ~~I think we both know which would be the better choice here~~

[It isn't uncommon for Grandma Simion to take on very young boarders. Even aside from her role as babysitter/makeshift teacher to the city's supernatural youth, sometimes kids just... stay a while. Nico is old enough to understand that this is usually because the adults they were staying with got arrested, but it still feels very theoretical to him-- he's never seen violence, only glimpses of its aftermath.]

[But his Grandma has explained that what she does is important, and that the kids staying with her might be quiet, not want to play, or even be outright mean, but that's just because they're hurting. It's important to be kind! Nico is freshly 8 and takes that very, very seriously.]

[Namine, the newest, is a little different from the others. Nico's never seen someone start with living with Grandma, they've always been students of hers first. He knows she's magic-y, because he feels it soft under his skin when she gets close, but he doesn't really get what Grandma was saying about her. She can't be nobody, she's Namine!]

[She's also really quiet, which usually means something bad happened. Even shy kids usually talk a little, but she just sits and draws. He thinks she'd feel better if she had a friend-- and Valentina said if you want a girl to like you, get her flowers.]

[So he got her flowers.]

[He goes looking for her as soon as he gets home, grinning and buoyant.]

[Namine has been having a hard time adjusting to being a person. She's only been one for a few months now and it's weird. She always feels like something in her is missing and she wonders sometimes if Kairi feels that way too. Probably not though, she's real.

It's good to not be living in that scary house anymore with the scary man and all his experiments but staying in a house with a bunch of supernatural kids isn't really any less strange. People here treat her more like she's a regular person here, even if she's not, which has been kind of...comforting? Nice? Namine isn't sure but she can tell this is better.

She doesn't really know how to make friends even if there's a part of her that remembers having them. She guesses that's the Kairi part. It doesn't help her talk to the other kids though so she has been keeping to herself. Namine can tell the other kids are watching her sometimes and that just makes her want to disappear.

How do you even connect to people if you're not a person? It's also a little scary because she's noticed that if she gets too close to anyone else she can see what she thinks are their memories. She's been drawing some of the stuff she sees lately but has otherwise kept that little quirk to herself. She feels weird enough as it is.

Namine is spending the day in her usual spot with her sketch book. Today she's drawing a picture of three kids her age holding hands on a beach. She's facing away from Nico so she can't see him coming but she can feel the presence of a full person getting closer. She flips her sketchbook to a blank page and looks up in his direction.]

Hello.

[Nico is holding his flowers behind his back and just beaming, very much a kid that is proud of some kind of accomplishment. It doesn't occur to him to be nervous-- if Valentina said this will work, then it will, plain and simple. He steps into her line of sight, bouncing on his heels.]

Hi Namine! What'cha drawing?

[Oh, the page is blank. Is she hiding what she was drawing? He decides to push past that ASAP.]

I, um, I have a present for you!

[Another big grin, bright and cheerful.]

[She almost tries to answer his question before he declares tells her about his gift. When he does, Namine looks surprised. A present? For her? Why? Namine turns her body towards him.]

O-Oh, what is it..?

[Is that a normal way to react to a present? Is that how a person reacts? She isn't sure. Regardless, Namine feels...happy, she thinks.]

[Nico is eight, and when you're eight, money is a challenge. Instead of a piggy bank, he has a stuffed animal that you're supposed to put a heating pad inside of. His sister never thinks of that when she's snooping through his stuff, and it's easy enough to bring with him to Grandma's. The money itself comes from a variety of sources-- little gifts from relatives, quarters found on the sidewalk or fished out of the fountain at the park, and sometimes hush money from older kids who he's caught making out at Grandma's. Gross.]

[He doesn't know how much flowers cost, so he's brought the stuffed animal with him, just to be on the safe side. He doesn't technically have permission to be this far away from the house, but it's okay! He's wearing his hat and his gloves and it's cloudy anyways, he'll be fine.]

[That the sun might not be the biggest threat doesn't occur to him. They've managed to keep a lot of things away from this kid.]

[He walks into the little flower shop he's seen while doing errands with Valentina, and goes from zero to overwhelmed very quickly. There are so many kinds of flowers! He just looks around, a look of vague distress on his face.]

[Aerith co-owns a small flower shop with her husband in a part of the city that has comparatively low rent, which means it's also near the local supernatural community. She doesn't mind at all, everyone loves flowers! Not to mention she does have some personal stake in this community. She just wants to make people smile with the flowers she grows. Most days are pretty slow with more activity outside of regular work hours and at lunch. People come in, sometimes she chats with regulars, and then they leave with more flowers than they planned to buy. Aerith and Zack are both very good salespeople.

Today Aerith is alone, it's the middle of the day on a weekday so she's not expecting to see anyone for another few hours at least. Because she's not expecting anyone, Aerith is sitting on a stool by the cash register scrolling through social media on her phone when little Nico walks through the door. She looks up when she hears the bell ring and notices the very young boy in what is clearly baby vampire safety gear holding a stuffed animal. Her day has just gone from boring to amazing.

Aerith opens her mouth to welcome her tiny customer and notices the look on his face. Oh no, poor thing needs help! She gets off of her stool and smooths down her apron and skirt before making her way over to where he is standing and looking upset.]

Hi there, can I help you?

[Nico jumps a little when Aerith talks to him-- he's used to shopping with Valentina or his grandmother, and nobody addresses the 8-year-old when they've got an adult with them. He gives her a quick appraising once-over, and hugs his stuffed animal a little closer, but then he smiles, a little shy but not overwhelmingly so.]

Um! Hello! I'm here to buy some flowers!

[He looks around the room again, visibly anxious in that way kids get when they're taking a situation way more seriously than they need to.]

It's, um, a present. For a girl. My cousin said girls love flowers, and she's always right about girls, but I didn't know there were so many kinds...

[Aerith laughs but not unkindly, she can't help it, he's just too cute. She looks around the store and then gives him a warm smile.]

There are a lot...but don't worry! It's my job to help you find the perfect ones.

[Aerith hums thoughtfully as she looks at the many many options. She has a hunch that he probably doesn't know much about flowers in general so she'll need to simplify.]

Tell me about this girl! Do you know her favorite color?

[Nico is young enough that he takes the 'favorite colors' thing pretty seriously. He frowns, troubled by this question.]

Um... No, I don't. She likes to draw? I actually don't know her very well...

[He frowns even harder, little face all scrunched up with worry.]

She just moved in with my grandma, um, and she doesn't really talk much? I don't really understand what happened at her old house but it was probably pretty scary, everybody stops talking about it when they notice I'm listening.

[He fidgets a little, fiddling with the strap on his sunhat.]

She isn't, um, you know, I think she'd be okay in the sun, but she doesn't play with the other kids when they go out. I think she's afraid we'll be mean or scary too, you know? And I'm there every day, so if we were friends, I could introduce her to everyone else!

[It only takes Aerith a few moments of listening to this child's story to put together an idea of what must have happened to the girl. She doesn't need any more details to know that he is trying to do something very kind. Aerith already knew she wasn't going to make this kid pay for a flower but now she knows she has to do something special for him and for his new friend. She nods at him and clasps her hands together.]

Then we should make sure to pick out some very nice flowers for her.

[Aerith reaches into the pocket of her apron and pulls out a small book. She holds it out towards him with a smile.]
