[Light is having one of the more average meal combos, like nothing too filling but filling enough for a young adult. He's used to L's eccentricates at this point but sometimes it still catches him off guard. All the sugar packets are gone and he's surprised the jams are intact. He can't imagine L's glucose levels are great, but he's long given up interrogating him about that.]

[He sighs and takes another bite of his mediocre eggs. He misses his mom's cooking. It wasn't great but it was better than this.]

How have you been? I feel like it's been a while.

[L is sitting all crunched up with his feet on the booth seat and looks up from his syrup and whipped cream mess that he's poured on top of the already sweet pancakes.]

I know finals week coming up has been so busy, and the school has been pressuring me to finish that book as soon as possible.

[I just. Remember hearing that some level of professor has to write a book or something to stay employed or reach a certain level of teaching? Or maybe I'm making that up. Whatever. I'm keeping it for this thread.]

[He takes a sip of "coffee" and peers over the edge of the cup at Light.]

[Oops I forgot I had to think of a topic. Light rattles off a fancier title/thesis than "taking matters into your own hands: an exploration of the justice-driven minds of the vigilante" or something.]

It's a topic that's been very interesting to me since I was young. I suppose I forgot about it for a while, though, until I was given to chance to write about it in this length.

[He's a little bit shy about it so he also takes a sip of his coffee but without the quotation marks.]

[He takes another bite of his meal and looks like he's thinking about something.]

[Light feels a little pressured to defend himself even though it's just a conversation. He hm's a little.]

It's more about how a vigilante is driven by their own sense of justice, correct or not. What causes that? What makes them believe they're in the right?

[He swirls his coffee around a bit.]

And what spurs them take make that final choice to take justice into their own hands?

[L picks up on Light's shift in tone and body language that indicate he's Activating Fight Mode and raises his non-eyebrows. Well, it makes sense, this is his entire book topic, it's no wonder he'd be defensive about it. L pauses in devouring the sugar pile and presses his thumb against his lips.]

[Light sips his coffee and actually smirks(?) a little at L. Maybe it's more of a coy smile, he's too soft to smirk.]

[It's a statement, not a request, but there's a little affection in his tone.]

[He's definitely teasing Light since he just complained about how he was being pushed to finish writing. Maybe this will be more motivating.]

[At first Light is feeling pretty good about himself, he always gets this warm feeling when L expresses interest in him like that. He opens his mouth to thank him but L, mouth full of food apparently, talks instead.]

[Light gives L a look that has this tired half-smile attached to it. He's aware at this point when he's being teased.]

[L can't help but smile at Light's tired look. It's pretty fun to get a reaction out of him. He goes back to focusing on food for a moment before speaking again.]

After finals are graded will I be seeing you on Thursdays again?

[I've decided they also get Thursday date nights except it's just getting coffee at the campus coffee shop and talking about research because it's the only day L comes to the campus if he can help it.]

[Light smiles a little brightly and hides it behind his coffee. He can tell when The Gay is coming through. He just likes when L acknowledges their little things like that, even if regularly scheduled meet-ups are something Light would hope his friend would remember. It just feels...special.
