It's time for a picnic! Are you on a date or just hanging out with a friend? What kind of food did you bring--homemade, store-bought, or take-out? The nice thing about picnics is you can have them just about anywhere, like the park or your front lawn or that little grassy patch by your apartment building. You don't even have to sit on the ground, honestly, that's what picnic tables are for! Hopefully it's a nice sunny day and you don't get rained out, but maybe you brought an umbrella just in case.

[He hasn't not work long sleeves in so long but if he's going to be sitting out in the sun it's no sleeves time and that's weird for him. His left arm is also covered in skin grafts, mostly his upper arm and shoulder, and he diligently smothering his arms with sunscreen, taking special care on those parts.]

So what's the big deal about eating outside?

[They can be at a table or on the ground, your pick.]

[The idea of Mello sitting on the ground is very funny to me so we're on the ground. No picnic blanket though, Sayu is sitting on her denim jacket. Since Mello has skin stuff Sayu picked a spot under some trees so that he's less likely to burn.

Today Sayu is wearing a sleeveless babydoll style dress today for comfort and air flow in the heat along with a baseball cap to keep the sun off her face. She's pulling some food out of a plastic bag, they stopped in somewhere on their way to the park, when Mello speaks up. She turns to him.]

Mello, you say some of the weirdest stuff, did you know that?

[She laughs.]

It's just, you know, nice! It's a nice day, so we might as well take advantage of it.

[He's still confused by the concept. The most advantage he's taken advantage of a nice day is going to go get groceries if it wasn't raining, and generally he avoids days that are too sunny. Matt doesn't even go outside much; they're just very indoors-y people and Mello stayed that way until he dated Sayu.]

[Once satisfied with his sunscreen application he reaches into the bag for one the chocolate bars he grabbed. Might as well start with the thing most likely to melt first before he drinks anything. He takes a moment to like...notice how different he and Sayu look again, because despite that he's forgone his leather pants in favor of cloth ones for this excursion, he's still in all black and she's...not. They got looks. But it's whatever, fuck them.]

It's not hot.

[That's about the most he can say about it. He's not sweating or anything in black pants and the breeze feels nice on his skin.]

Is this something you do often?

[Sayu gets a small amount of joy at the confused and disapproving looks that random strangers give them. She knows they're an odd couple and she thinks it's very funny when other people react to that. Talking to Mello about extremely normal people things is hilarious, though. It's like talking to an alien. Sayu takes a bite of an onigiri that she bought and looks out at the park.]

Mm, sort of. It's fun to come out with friends when the seasons change. It's really pretty in the spring, you know?

[She looks back at him.]

Have you really never eaten outside before?

[Mello's never taken particular notice of which seasons are prettier than others or anything like that, just which ones are colder or warmer, rainier or sunnier. And he sure as hell didn't grow up with more than Matt as a friend and he's already considered how little Matt goes outside. So he scoffs in response and takes a good sized bite of chocolate before responding.]

Never. Maybe if the orphanage forced us as kids, but nothing I remember.

[He looks upwards at the sky through the leaves of the tree. Maybe there's something to bother admiring about it, see whatever Sayu sees in this stuff. It's hard to, honestly, all he sees are leaves, nothing beyond that honestly.]

[Oh right, she always forgets he grew up in an orphanage. She's not sure how she always forgets, she hangs out at his apartment with Matt enough. Sayu watches her boyfriend for a moment. He looks so out of place she can't help but grin at him.]

Sometimes talking to you is kind of like talking to an alien. Have you really never noticed it's nice to be out in nature every once in a while?

[Sayu knocks their shoulders together affectionately and points towards the sky with the hand that isn't holding what remains of her onigiri.]

Look, isn't it pretty how the the light is coming through the clouds?

[Then she points at a patch of flowers nearby.]

Or the color and shape of the flowers?

[Then she points up in the direction of the trees above them where Mello was looking moments ago.]

Or the way the wind sounds rustling through the leaves? It's relaxing!
