TEXTING MEME

You’ve got your TFLN, you’ve got your sexting, now here’s the meme for all those gen texts, phone calls, voicemails, pictures of your cats, and whatever else your little heart can come up with, because who doesn't like a little old fashioned friendly texting. (Or enemy texting, if that's more your bag.) instructions: What it says on the tin! Leave a comment with your character, include preferences, a start, absolutely nothing or whatever you want. Run around and reply to others. Lather, rinse, repeat.

[By this point, Shinji has been reunited with Kaworu and Rei, who had been chatting in the classroom while Shinji went to pee. Between that and Haruhi's reassurances, he's feeling a little less panicked.]

Oh. It did sort of sound like they were worried about my motives... Are they worried about you? Is somebody else bullying you or something?

[Haruhi IS pretty small and cute, Shinji could definitely see that happening.]

[And she does, it doesn't go great tbh. There's a lot of shouting to no one's surprise. Tamaki literally cries. Hikaru calls Shinji annoying which makes Haruhi yell more. Kaoru backs up Hikaru just with less venom. Honey and Mori seem fine though, they have accepted that Haruhi has one whole new friend. Kyouya eventually makes them all wrap it up since they're all in various states of ready to host so Haruhi goes back to finish getting dressed and text Shinji again.]

[That was a long enough break that both Rei and Kaworu have been filled in on the situation and are now having some kind of very intense half-nonverbal conversation that is making Shinji's palms sweat almost as much as the scene in the bathroom. Kaworu still has that benign smile on his face but it feels incredibly ominous right now. ]

Maybe?? It was really weird. I kinda thought they were going to punch me or try to take my money or something but then they just kept asking me about my intentions? I think Suoh-senpai mentioned your dad not approving but he worded it really weird....

[she's trying to give them the benefit of the doubt here even though they're super immature and stupid. she sticks her head out of the dressing room to yell that they had all better apologize. Shinji is a nice boy! another few minutes later she texts again.]

Honey-senpai and Mori-senpai told me to apologize to you on their behalf, I'm working on the others (￣ ￣|||)

don't worry about my dad, I mentioned you to him the other day and he seemed happy I was making friends

[I can't think of a good way for Kaworu to attempt to jump in front of this bullet for Shinji but if that was an option, you know he would. He's more the "die for you" type than the "kill for you" type. Where's Asuka. We need a mix.]

oh, um, tell them its okay, no harm done! I've definitely had worse, I was mostly really confused... I don't want to make more trouble for you.

[He perks up a little at 'making friends'.]

[He sends that before checking with his friends, but a quick, nervous glance at them earns a slight tilt of Rei's head in assent and an encouraging smile from Kaworu.]

[he has definitely HEARD of the host club, but up until this exact moment he assumed it was something they'd put on for a school festival. he went to a festival that had a maid cafe once, not that he'd gone anywhere near it. way too embarrassing.]

they do that year-round? I heard houshakuji-san mention it but I thought it was a charity event or part of a festival...

the school really lets them run something like that?

[sometimes you're the son of the chairman of the school so you just do whatever the hell you want until your grandmother makes you stop. sometimes you also make friends with Kyouya who makes very compelling arguments about how the host club is definitely a cultural club shut up.]

it's not really like any club I've seen at any other school, but Tamaki-senpai says that the goal of the host club is to make all girls happy so I guess it's not doing any harm

[outside of the text conversation, Shinji and his friends have already left the school to head for the train station. he glances over at Rei, who is walking quietly, not really looking at much of anything. he can't imagine her in a place like that.]

[unfortunately Shinji is going to have to sit with that thought for quite some time before Haruhi gets back to him, she's busy chatting with a bunch of cute girls and bringing people refreshments, Haruhi doesn't even acknowledge the first questions]

[club ends and Haruhi has literally been thinking about this for a few hours and looking at the hosts and processing, please excuse some probably incoherent texts Shinji]

it just doesn't make any sense, they're the ones who put me into a position to be hit on in the first place

I mean, sure, Tamaki-senpai complains sometimes about me acting like a boy

but if they had a problem with it I don't think they would have let me be a host at all

even if you were hitting on me it's not any different, it shouldn't matter what your gender is

[the break gives Shinji plenty of time to freak out, he's currently sitting at the kitchen table in Misato's apartment half slumped down like he's trying to melt through the chair. the gang's all here! other than Misato herself, who is still at work. Rei is staring down the tea kettle like a particularly complex math problem (she's trying to make tea) and Kaworu had been talking quietly about the infinite diversity of humanity and Shinji's inherent kindness but then Asuka got home. she's currently in the middle of a rant about how Shinji brought this on himself that sounds suspiciously like she's still planning on beating up a couple of hosts when Haruhi texts back.]

[sorry Haruhi but the first text is from Asuka, who grabbed Shinji's phone off the table.]

yeah well some people DO care about gender! you don't think people are going to notice two guys getting

[on her way home Haruhi's shopping for some groceries and still processing while Shinji's texts come in. this is going to be difficult...on the one hand, technically she likes guys and really does not care about looking gay (she doesn't really have strong feelings about the gender of her partner if she was looking anyway, she just hasn't really thought about it). on the other hand, maybe people would be more likely to guess she's a girl if they think she's attracted to men? though that doesn't make a whole lot of sense, I mean her dad...well her dad also has a gender thing going on...much to consider. she's certainly not going to talk to the hosts about it either, they started this mess.

hm. they DID start this mess. well then guess it's their fault if anything bad comes of it. being a host isn't exactly her ideal use of time and she can definitely still repay her debt in other ways if needed....well Shinji said he didn't care so whatever.]

[the neighbors can definitely hear Asuka protesting being accused of homophobia! she hasn't quite come around to "I like girls" but she DOES have that "I just really care about gay rights for non-personal reasons, nothing to do with me, no sir" attitude going on.]

I don't know about people in our class but the host club doesn't really care about stuff like that, it would be really hypocritical considering Hikaru and Kaoru's...marketing?

I'm actually surprised you haven't seen the photo books and Renge's doujinshi around campus...

[Haruhi feels so bad about this and after some time (several minutes? an hour? A While) thinking about that last text she finally puts together that Shinji might actually genuinely be attracted to boys and Asuka isn't homophobic she's just being protective. oh boy okay let's be as clear as possible...]

[Shinji is, of course, VERY careful to avoid being caught looking at things like "photobooks of hot guys" and "yaoi manga". He's probably caught glimpses of all that stuff and just ignored it.]

[Asuka, meanwhile, has been distracted by complaining about Renge's doujins to a very baffled Rei, so at least for this exact moment, Shinji has his phone back.]

oh my god I am so sorry about that Asuka doesn't understand boundaries

[he thinks about that for a second, then deletes the message from his own history, lest Asuka see it and bring up any number of stupid roommate fights they've had over the past few months.]

[more important, though, is that last text. he just... stares at it for a little while. finally, he looks up at Kaworu, who smiles serenely and nods.]
